It seems that Brandon Boyd, the frontman of Incubus, has been working on the band’s ninth studio album, which is great news, as per theprp. The California band ended up abandoning their original release plans and going back to the studio to compose and record additional new music for that endeavor, even though they had initially planned to release under the title “Something In The Water” in 2025. It’s unclear if Boyd’s recent social media post below was a throwback or an indication that more studio time was eventually needed because he did mention in January of last year that the record had once again been finished.
In 1991, while still in high school, Brandon Boyd, guitarist Mike Einziger, bassist Alex Katunich, and drummer José Pasillas created Incubus. They had been a band for a while before they gave themselves a name; they only decided on “Incubus” after they were asked to come up with a band name for a gig that was coming up. The band’s early performances were regularly held in Sunset Strip nightclubs in Los Angeles, including the Roxy, the Troubadour, and the Whisky a Go Go. Early on, the members of Incubus became close through Phish and Primus, and they modeled their career after their grassroots strategy.
Since they could only focus on their music during the hours when they weren’t in school, Incubus made a large number of their early recordings with Jim Wirt and Chillum Records at the 4th Street Recording studio in Santa Monica. “Let Me Tell Ya ‘Bout Root Beer”, their debut two-song EP, was recorded in 1994. The debut album “Fungus Amongus”, which was also recorded with Wirt and released on Incubus’s own label Stopuglynailfungus Music, came after this. Gavin Koppel, better known by his stage name DJ Lyfe, was later brought into the band by Incubus. Incubus signed a seven-record contract with Sony’s Immortal Records, which would subsequently change its name to Epic Records, the following year. Korn was signed to the label by Epic/Immortal A&R Paul Pontius, who had noticed the group.
