Founders Mika Luttinen, Kimmo Luttinen, Mika Pääkkö, Ari Holappa, and Antti Pihkala started the band in November 1990. When the band’s first album, “Tol Cormpt Norz Norz Norz”, made it into the Finnish charts, they became a national success. When black metal took off in the mid-1990s, Impaled Nazarene stopped donning corpse paint. Impaled Nazarene changed their style and reduced part of their intensity after “Suomi Finland Perkele” was released, however this change came to a stop when Kimmo Luttinen was taken out of the lineup. Beginning with “Nihil” (2000) with the addition of Alexi Laiho, guitarist for Children of Bodom, the band switched to a sound that has been called “a benzedrine-fueled combination of thrash metal and Iron Maiden” after their delivery became more rough. Laiho’s role was fundamental.
It was clear that now that we had finally two guitar players that we kind of like wanted to get away from that punky kind of writing style and started just wanting to get more back to the metal feeling. – Mika Luttinen
“Pro Patria Finlandia”, their tenth studio album, was a well-liked import for Japan. Impaled Nazarene has been to four continents and more than thirty countries on tour alongside bands like Cannibal Corpse, Mayhem, and Dark Tranquility. The death of guitarist Teemu Raimoranta on March 16, 2003, was attributed to “an alcohol-related accidental fall” after he fell over a bridge onto the ice below. After nearly 15 years in the lineup, the band announced on January 15, 2022, that Tomi Ullgrén had left, citing his hectic job schedule interfering with the band’s rehearsal schedule.
