I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME (iDKHOW), an electric pop rock group from Salt Lake City, stopped by the Egyptian Room at Old National Centre in Indianapolis, Indiana last Friday, one of the final dates on their fall iMPENDiNG GLOOM tour celebrating their latest album “Gloom Division.” Coming along with them from Los Angeles was the garage dance-punk inspired band ALEXSUCKS to help get the night started.
It was clear from the start that the crowd was already familiar with ALEXSUCKS, being met with lots of cheers and fans singing along right from the get go. The band had a great stage presence, focusing on a lot of interaction not only with the crowd but with each other: dancing together and playing their individual parts towards each other. The lighting on stage added a fun atmosphere, with alternates between heavy blocks of color and almost disco-like effects. Towards the end of their set, the band had a great back and forth moment with the crowd during the chorus of “6 Pack and Cigarettes,” which stirred up a lot of dancing in the crowd. Overall, ALEXSUCKS brought a great start to the night, with their strong sound and high energy keeping the fans amped up not only for them but in preparation for iDKHOW next.
iDKHOW came out on stage prepared to dance through the night, something I don’t say lightly as I don’t believe that I ever saw them stop moving on stage for longer than it took to get a sip of water. Their setlist was full of crowd favorites, with the audience joining in to help with backup vocals during various songs such as “Social Climb,” which also had fun movement on stage with guitarist and bass player having a brief back and forth moment. If I had to pick a single word to sum up the vibes that iDKHOW brought to their show, I would describe it as nothing short of purely ‘groovy.’
Frontman Dallon Weekes was sure to spend plenty of time connecting with the crowd, mentioning the fact that Morrissey was playing a sold out show in the same building just a few hundred feet away, and how Morrissey was one of his inspirations for music. With that, he also thanked the crowd for choosing to be with him that evening. Weekes brought an inviting presence to the room every time he spoke, almost seeming like everyone was old friends as he made jokes about how you can’t lie if you’re holding a microphone and that if you say the name of the city you’re in everyone in the crowd will yell – something that was proven correct each time he tried it.
As the night was coming to a close, Weekes pulled some surprises out of his pocket, covering two songs from his former band The Brobecks. During the second cover “Visitation of the Ghost,” Weekes spent some time hanging out in the audience during an extended bridge version of the song, with snippets of pop hits “Please Please Please” and “HOT TO GO!” thrown in the audio mixing. The final surprise of the night came during the encore, as they played “Nobody Likes the Opening Band,” and frontman Alex Alvarez from ALEXSUCKS joined on stage to add in a twist of new lyrics to the song.
While the iMPENDiNG GLOOM tour has now finished out for the year, be sure to check out iDKHOW’s music as we wait to see what’s next:
