Ian Watkins, a former frontman for the Lostprophets, was killed, and two individuals have been detained on suspicion of murder, as reported by theprp. Yesterday, October 11, the disgraced singer was slain inside HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England. Watkins, 48, was discovered dead in the prison while completing a 29-year sentence with a six-year extension of his license. After Watkins was convicted of multiple child sex-related offenses, that sentence was imposed in December 2013. Two people, one of whom is 25 years old and the other is 48, were arrested on suspicion of participating in Watkins’ murder, according to a statement released by the West Yorkshire Police Department. According to the Sun, Watkins’ jugular was severed when a fellow prisoner allegedly shanked him in the neck. In the ostensibly prearranged attack, he was declared dead at the site. The following was the statement from the West Yorkshire Police Department:
Detectives have launched a murder investigation after the death of a man in HMP Wakefield.
Officers were called by staff at the prison at 9.39am this morning (Saturday 11 October) to reports of a serious assault on a prisoner.
A man aged 48 was found with serious injuries. Despite medical attention he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two men aged 25 and 43 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in police custody.
Detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are investigating and enquiries remain ongoing.
One of the most well-known prisoners to be held at HMP Wakefield was Watkins, whose band had achieved gold status in the US and multiple platinum, gold, and silver certifications in their home country of the UK (Wales). Even though Watkins’ crimes were heinous, his celebrity persisted after his incarceration. In November 2016, some three years after Watkins’ prison sentence, the band received a silver certification for their 2006 hit “Rooftops (A Liberation Broadcast).” Other prisoners allegedly targeted Watkins because of his notoriety and the horrific nature of his crimes.
