Finnish psychedelic folk metal outfit Hexvessel have dropped a brand new single, “Mother Destroyer”, offering one final taste of their forthcoming seventh studio album, “Nocturne”. The full album is set for release on June 13th, 2025, via Prophecy Productions.
Clocking in at nearly seven minutes, “Mother Destroyer” is a sprawling journey that weaves together themes of cosmic fatalism, ecological grief, and reverence for primordial feminine power. Frontman and songwriter Mat “Kvohst” McNerney describes the track as a hymn to the sacred and desecrated goddess: “The Earth as origin and oblivion, as womb and grave. At the core of every star, there is darkness.”
“Nocturne” first took shape as a commissioned piece for the 2024 edition of Roadburn Festival, under the title Music for Gloaming: A Nocturne. Now, it has been fully realized as a studio album. Musically, it blends the band’s roots in folk and psychedelic rock with shades of black metal, acoustic interludes, cosmic synths, and ghostly piano. The sound draws inspiration from both the black metal legacy of Quorthon and minimalist composers like Philip Glass, György Ligeti, and Arvo Pärt.
Adding to the album’s rich sonic tapestry are guest appearances from Saara Nevalainen, avant-garde black metal figure Yusaf Vicotnik Parvez (of Dødheimsgard), and Oranssi Pazuzu’s Juho Vanhanen.
