Progressive is one of the most fascinating and interesting subgenres in heavy metal, because it’s able to deliver an incredible range of feelings to the listener. Which is why now I’ll tell you all about the upcoming album by the Norwegian band Course Of Fate. The gentlemen will release “Behind The Eclipse” on January 30th, 2026, via ROAR.
And let me tell you, the first thing you’ll notice and that will conquer your heart is Eivind Gunnesen’s voice. Powerful, yet incredibly delicate when needed, he guides the listener throughout the whole album with conviction and without fear. If it isn’t uncommon to begin the album with a suite, the title track alone proves the worth of this album.
But if you’re thinking that the rest of the group can be forgotten, you’re wrong on so many levels. Kenneth Henriksen and Fredrik Jacobsen both do a very good job in intertwining melodies with their guitars, while Per-Morten Bergseth holds the rhythmic section with his bass. Torstein Haakafoss’s drums is calculated, and doesn’t hammer unnecessarily unless it’s required.
The ability of Course of Fate to sound heavier than ever without sacrificing subtlety is what most impressed me. This is definitely something that the group has achieved with time and experience. There’s always space to breathe, but the compositions feel denser and the aggression hits harder. There are a few elements to consider, if you will: a change in dynamics, tempos, and layers of instruments that go beyond the normal effort. My favorite track is “Hiding From the Light“, that is a testimony to what I’ve written!
I feel like I’ve heard a band fully embrace its strengths by the time the album ends. Course Of Fate has created a product that is both thought-provoking and potent, heavy and forward-thinking, dark and bright at the same time. So don’t miss a chance to spin this album once or more, when “Behind The Eclipse” is released at the end of the month!
