Grammy mix-up: Spiritbox singer mistaken for Poppy on red carpet

During the 2025 Grammy Awards red carpet on February 2, Spiritbox vocalist Courtney LaPlante was mistakenly identified as singer Poppy by an interviewer. Both artists were nominated for Best Metal Performance – LaPlante for Spiritbox‘s “Cellar Door” and Poppy for “Suffocate” (with Knocked Loose).

LaPlante played along gracefully, stating “I am Poppy” and expressing hope for a win. She used the opportunity to highlight that no woman has won Best Metal Performance in the category’s 35-year history. While maintaining the Poppy persona, she referenced a previous nomination from “2020” (actually Poppy‘s 2021 nomination for “Bloodmoney“).

Gojira ultimately won the category with “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira!)”, their Olympic Games opening ceremony performance. Other nominees included Judas Priest and Metallica.
