Gojira’s Joe Duplantier joins Mawiza for defiant final single from upcoming album “Ül”

Mawiza, the Chilean groove-metal sensation rooted in Mapuche tradition, has released the third and final single from their upcoming album “Ül,” arriving July 18th via Season of Mist. Titled “Ti Inan Paw‑Pawkan”, the track features none other than Gojira frontman Joe Duplantier, whose unmistakable roar joins forces with ancient Mapuzungun chants in a haunting call to reconnect with nature.

Opening with the peculiar twang of a metal mouth harp—an instrument traditionally made of wood by the Mapuche—the song channels sorrow and displacement, honoring indigenous people forced away from their ancestral lands. But it’s also a rallying cry. Beneath the layers of industrial grooves and shamanic percussion, Mawiza send a powerful message: even buried under concrete, nature is still alive, still resisting.

Shot atop a building in Santiago, the accompanying video contrasts smog-choked skylines with spiritual imagery and scenes of Duplantier recording alongside the band. The performance is intense and ritualistic, capturing the internal war between city life and earthbound identity. Frontman Awka, who wrote the lyrics while grappling with depression, makes the connection painfully clear: when nature suffers, so do we.

“Ti Inan Paw‑Pawkan”—translated as “The Last Harp Call”—closes the album with a sense of urgency. Driving percussion from drummer Txalkan echoes through the record like a wild river bursting through urban decay. The chant that ends the track brings Duplantier’s ferocity into conversation with ancestral voices, creating a kind of spiritual smoke signal rising above the noise.

The song follows earlier singles “Wingkawnoam” and “Mamüll Reke”, setting the stage for “Ül,” a nine-track collection steeped in tribal rhythms, environmental protest, and Mapuche resilience.

Mawiza will bring their fire to Europe this summer with fellow Chilean act Ater on the “Immortal Flame” tour, starting July 16th in Maribor and ending August 2nd in Ostend.
