In a move that blurs the line between theatrical rock and full‑blown religious institution, Ghost have announced the launch of their first official “Church of Papa” in Europe — a fully operational venue where fans will be able to attend themed ceremonies, exclusive performances, and what the band describes as “spiritual‑based rituals.”
The Church will open later this year in an unidentified European capital, according to the band’s statement; the precise location will be revealed through a series of enigmatic clues. The structure is supposed to have a souvenir shop that is “larger than most cathedrals’ naves,” stained-glass windows that show each Papa Emeritus, and a confessional booth that plays deep cuts rather than absolution.
“It’s not just a band anymore — it’s a lifestyle,” the announcement reads.
“A sacred space for worship, celebration, and the occasional unholy sing-along will be provided by the Church of Papa.”
According to reports, the church would hold weekly “Liturgies,” which will consist of a sermon, an acoustic performance, and a fan gathering. Although the band states that “face paint or a mask is optional but spiritually recommended,” attendees are asked to wear ceremonial robes.
The introduction of a new role in the Ghost universe, the Cardinal of Merch, who is responsible for managing limited-edition drops that are only accessible to those who successfully complete the Church’s initiation ritual—which is rumored to involve candles, incense, and an unexpectedly difficult quiz about Ghost lore—may be the most fascinating detail.
Tobias Forge has not yet commented publicly, but sources close to the band claim he has been “deeply involved in architectural decisions,” including the installation of a pipe organ capable of playing “Square Hammer” at full volume.
Supporters have already started speculating about whether the Church will become a permanent attraction, a regular tour stop, or the beginning of a global network of sanctuaries with a Ghost motif. As befits a project that falls somewhere between performance art, fanboy devotion, and ecclesiastical parody, the band is purposefully keeping information vague for the time being.
The Church of Papa is expected to open its doors this autumn. Whether it becomes a pilgrimage site or the world’s most elaborate merch booth remains to be seen. Read the full statement here.
