On the initiative of guitarist and composer Guilherme Henriques and singer Ruben Freitas, the band was created in Porto in 2016. Shortly after, Freitas assembled many local musicians to record the EP of the same name, which was published on Everlasting Spew in November of that same year. From the beginning, the goal was to present the band in an entirely anonymous way, with all-black attire and masks with a seal that, according to Henriques, represented Gaerea‘s sense of unity. The color choice was made in order to symbolize “great chaos” and draw the audience’s focus away from each individual member and toward the music.
They agreed to distribute their debut album through Transcending Obscurity Records at the beginning of 2018. The album, titled “Unsettling Whispers”, was released on June 22 and garnered positive reviews from critics who commended Gaerea‘s meticulous attention to detail in order to produce a more contemporary sound than the traditional black metal approach. The Extension to Nothingness Tour, which visited numerous European cities between October and December, came after the album. They started their European tour, The Svm of All Storms, in April 2019. Following that, they participated in the Sirius Metal Festival in China before returning to Europe for a number of festivals.
