After the success of their well-received 2024 album “Skinwalker”, the Australian/Finnish dark progressive doom metal band The Eternal is getting ready to release their new EP “Celestial”, which is scheduled for January 16th through Reigning Phoenix Music. The lineup is comprehensive of Mark Kelson handling vocals and guitars, Richie Poate is on guitars, Niclas Etelävuori is rocking the bass (ex-Amorphis / Flat Earth), and Jan Rechberger on drums (also from Amorphis).
This EP has really sparked some thoughts for me and has definitely raised a few questions that are sticking around. I just want to say that, honestly, I wasn’t really sure what to expect at first. After I gave it a listen, it totally brought back those classic rock 90s vibes, kind of like Jane’s Addiction or some of those ballad-like tunes. I was a bit puzzled at first, but after giving it another shot, I totally changed my perspective on it.
I can definitely feel the band is not afraid to jump into both beauty and darkness, checking out new creative paths. You can totally sense their one-of-a-kind mix of moody vibes, heavy sounds, and deep progressive elements all the way through. They totally take us on this amazing emotional and cinematic journey with their music and vibe.
Honestly, this isn’t your typical metal album, especially if you were expecting it to be heavier. The drum is there, you know, Jan is really something else! He totally brings a fresh energy and his drumming is super steady yet lively with all those vibrant shifts. The riffs bring in some experimental sounds and notes, while Mark’s warm voice keeps everything grounded.
I totally understand that it’s all about exploration for them, but I really enjoyed the progressive vibe it had. The six songs each offer something unique, It’s really exciting to explore all the different layers and details of each of them, but honestly, everything shifted for me with “Casting Down Shadows,” the fifth track. It’s such an intriguing blend of beauty and darkness, totally reminding me of those melancholic sounds. I really loved that track from the whole EP.
Make sure you don’t just listen once and leave it at that! This band is really getting into a lot these days, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for them.
