Foo Fighters guitarist Pat Smear sidelined from upcoming shows after injury

Foo Fighters will perform their next shows without longtime guitarist Pat Smear. The band confirmed that Smear recently injured his left foot and needs time to recover before returning to the stage.

Injury forces short break from touring

According to the band, the injury happened in what they jokingly described as a “bizarre gardening accident.” As a result, Smear has suffered multiple broken bones in his left foot and is currently unable to perform.

Because of this, Foo Fighters decided it was best for Smear to sit out a handful of shows so he can heal properly. The band emphasized that his health comes first and that they want him back only when he is fully recovered.

Jason Falkner steps in temporarily

In the meantime, Jason Falkner will fill in on guitar for the upcoming dates. Falkner is known for his work with Beck and St. Vincent, and he has extensive touring experience.

The band commented that while they will miss Smear on stage, they are grateful to have a trusted and skilled musician stepping in during his recovery period.

Rock history is full of strange injuries

Although it remains unclear whether the injury actually occurred while gardening or if the band was simply referencing “Spinal Tap”, unusual accidents are nothing new in rock history. Over the years, several legendary musicians have suffered odd injuries offstage.

Nevertheless, Smear is not expected to be away for long.

Only a few shows affected

Fortunately, Foo Fighters have only three live shows scheduled before May, which limits the impact of Smear’s absence.

01/10 Guanajuato, Mexico – Feria Estatal de León
01/14 Los Angeles, California – Kia Forum (feat. XCOMM)
01/24 Launceston, Australia – UTAS Stadium (feat. Full Blower, Moon Band & Spooky Eyes)

The band has faced similar setbacks before

Notably, this is not the first time Foo Fighters have adapted to an on-the-road injury. Back in 2015, Dave Grohl famously continued touring after breaking his leg, performing from a custom-built throne.

Later on, that same throne was even used by Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose during his own injury-related recovery.
