Familiar paths of symphonic metal – review of “Song of Darkness” by Leaves’ Eyes

Author Benedetta Baldin - 25.2.2026

Symphonic metal band Leaves’ Eyes is about to release a new, tight and well-produced EP called “Song of Darkness” that really cements their place in the metal scene. To start, I want to highlight that the production on this EP is done very good; it sounds full, powerful, and expertly put together.

The mixing and mastering are also notable, every bit of orchestral sound, guitar riff, and drum beat stands out clearly without sounding cluttered. It’s a smooth, contemporary sound that still nods to the genre’s origins. The bass is a bit hidden in the mix, but that is common in the metal world so I can’t complain too much!

Musically, the EP sticks to what symphonic metal fans know and love, with big arrangements, soaring melodies, and a movie-like feel that long-time listeners will find familiar. While we don’t shy away from some good ol’ symphonic, unfortunately some parts can feel a bit expected. Still, Leaves’ Eyes handles these familiar elements with skill and accuracy, keeping the music interesting even when it sticks to safe choices.

One of the EP’s biggest highlights is how Elina Siirala and Alexander Krull’s vocals play off each other. And as if they knew that I was yearning for a ballad, the band didn’t disappoint me and included in the EP “Roots Eternal.” By cutting out a lot of the extra grandiosity, Leaves’ Eyes created a touching and unforgettable moment.

So if you’re looking to add to your playlist some well-done symphonic metal, you don’t need to look further. “Song of Darkness” will be a great choice, even if it’s short. On March 6th, Reigning Phoenix Music will release “Song of Darkness”, and it will be for everyone to enjoy!
