Ihsahn, a guitarist and singer, and Samoth, a guitarist, founded the Norwegian black metal group Emperor in 1991. After splitting up in 2001, the group got back together for a few festival appearances and quick US tours between 2005 and 2007. They then got back together again between 2013 and 2014. In 2016, Emperor underwent his third overhaul. Members of the extreme metal community and music journalists alike believe that Emperor has had a significant impact on the black metal genre. Ihsahn and Samoth first connected at a blues/rock music seminar when they were young. Under several identities, including Dark Device, Xerasia, and Embryonic, the two young men started performing together. The band quickly changed into the well-known Thou Shalt Suffer.

The band issued a demo named “Wrath of the Tyrant” after a brief period of time together. It became well-known in the underground very fast, and the then-new label Candlelight took notice. Soon after, Ihsahn continued to play lead guitar and sing, Faust was hired as a drummer, Samoth switched to rhythm guitar, and a record deal was struck. “Emperor”, their first EP, was published by Candlelight Records. After that, the band joined with Deathlike Silence Productions, the notorious first black metal label, with the intention of releasing their next album shortly, however they were never able to do so.
