Mike Portnoy is a well-known drummer, composer, and original member of Dream Theater, a progressive metal band. From the band’s founding in 1985 until his departure in 2010, Portnoy—who is renowned for his technical mastery and inventive drumming style—was a major creative force. With albums like “Images and Words” (1992), “Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory” (1999), and “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” (2009) serving as landmarks in progressive music, his work with Dream Theater contributed to the development of the progressive metal genre. He has received several honors, including several awards from Modern Drummer magazine, for his drumming technique, which blends complex rhythms, unusual time signatures, and a profound grasp of melody.

Portnoy continued to be one of the most sought-after drummers in rock and metal even after departing Dream Theater in 2010. While maintaining his longstanding position in the progressive rock group Transatlantic, he co-founded a number of noteworthy ventures, such as the supergroups The Winery Dogs, Sons of Apollo, and Flying Colors. Along with bassist Tony Levin and Dream Theater‘s John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess, Portnoy brought back the instrumental powerhouse Liquid Tension Experiment, releasing new music after a 20-year break. Because of his versatility as a drummer, he has been able to switch from pop, jazz-fusion, rock, and advanced metal with ease.
