Gary Holt, guitarist for Slayer and Exodus, has identified two thrash metal bands that are deserving of greater “credit.” In a recent interview with Trunk Nation on Sirius XM, Holt, one of the most significant guitarists in thrash, defends the bands. In addition to Exodus, he mentions German bands Destruction and Kreator when asked who he would add to the genre’s “big four” (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax).
Well, it’s none of the Americans, I’ll tell you that right now! It’s Destruction and Kreator. I put Destruction first. Me and Baloff were in love with Destruction long before we ever met them. And they were ripping these albums apart and killing it before these other bands.
Before going back to the German scene and recognizing Sodom, Holt also gives recognition to American bands Testament, Overkill, and Death Angel.
Destruction and Kreator were there in the beginning. So I’m always giving credit where credit’s due to my friends from overseas.
