During his appearance at Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne‘s “Back To The Beginning” farewell show, Disturbed vocalist David Draiman was met with a somewhat cold reaction. Through his involvement in the supergroup covers sets directed by Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, Draiman took the stage to perform renditions of Osbourne‘s “Shot In The Dark” and Sabbath‘s “Sweet Leaf.” But when Draiman took the stage, he was greeted with some jeers and middle fingers, according to Birmingham Live. Anthrax‘s Scott Ian, Extreme‘s Nuno Bettencourt, and former Megadeth bassist David Ellefson were among the backup musicians for Draiman’s performance alongside Ozzy Osbourne veterans Jake E. Lee, Mike Bordin, and Adam Wakeman.
Due to his frequent public endorsement of Israel in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which started in 2023, Draiman has become a divisive figure. The most contentious of these was probably Draiman’s 2024 stint with the Israel Defense Forces, during which he signed an artillery shell that was directed at Hamas and contained a profanity. Critics of Draiman’s support and conduct have often pointed to the tens of thousands of civilian deaths that have been documented in that bitterly contested battle. Draiman himself would subsequently declare that he is “pro peace and coexistence between ALL PEOPLE” after signing that shell. However, the public’s perception of Draiman is still divided, as demonstrated by the backlash over his participation in Plush‘s most recent single, “Why,” last month.
Draiman wasn’t the only musician that stirred up controversy at today’s major farewell. During the ceremony, Marilyn Manson, the shock musician, paid homage to Ozzy and company in a pre-recorded greeting. Online users were outraged at Manson‘s involvement. Manson‘s planned UK gigs this fall have been the target of demonstrations spearheaded by local residents and politicians in the UK due to his ongoing musical comeback after his career was ruined by more than a dozen claims of sexual assault and misconduct. The public outcry prompted the cancellation of his October tour’s opening date not long ago.
