A while ago, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced a new variant of the coronavirus, called the Omicron variant.

If you’re thinking that the name might be appropriate for a metal band, you’re very right. Namely, the Metal Archives website lists two death metal bands under the name Omicron.

And now, in addition, Belgian death metal band Omicron have told the media about their feelings about the new chorus name. The band fears that negative connotations will now be attached to their name.

“We were a bit anxious that our name might get a negative connotation,” they said. “But we also felt it might give us the exposure much needed for bands [starting out] in a world overcrowded with musicians trying to leave their mark upon the industry”, the band tells Vice.

The band says it originally got its name from the Omicron Cygni star system.
