Dave Mustaine speaks about Megadeth’s farewell tour, his health and more music

On Tuesday, September 8, Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine joined Rolling Stone’s Kory Grow at New York City’s Kaufman Music Center for a special live Q&A to celebrate his new memoir, “In My Darkest Hour”, as per Blabbermouth. Audio of the full conversation has now been made available. During the panel, the 65-year-old metal icon addressed several major topics, sharing his perspective on Megadeth‘s ongoing farewell tour…

It’s bittersweet. It doesn’t feel great, I can tell you that much. There’s times when we take the stairs in the back, and walking up the stairs, I keep saying the same thing I’ve said every night when I go up the stairs. And it’s like a private thing. I just say, ‘It’s your stage.’ And I go up there and I do my job. And that’s it. I go out and do my job, the gift that God’s given me.

… and revealing whether he has unreleased vault material he plans to drop in the future.

There’s bits and parts, pieces and little stuff like that. There’s a couple of completed songs from the last album with James and Teemu and Dirk that we did not release yet. I think those were supposed to be bonus tracks for the label or something. I’m not sure. [So there may be] a song or something [that could see the light of day]. But I don’t know.

Additionally, Mustaine—who recently revealed he is battling a hand condition that severely affects his guitar playing—offered insights into what his ultimate retirement plans look like.

Well, I’m sure I’m gonna be involved in music to some degree, whether it’s as simple as just listening to it or making it. I don’t know. I’m hoping God’s gonna heal me and there’s gonna be some kind of new technology that they’ll say, ‘Hey, guess what? When you put your hand in this glove and then — boom — your hand’s given back to you nice and shiny and new.’ That would be pretty bitchin’, I think. But I’m just gonna keep trying to be hopeful and play the best I can until then.
