Costa Rican stoner-doom trio Crypt Monarch are back with a crushing new chapter in their undead saga. Following their 2021 debut “The Necronaut”, the band is set to release their second full-length album, “Codex Pestilentia”, on September 5th.
The album continues the tale of a resurrected king who now leads his army 200 years after the events of the debut. This time, the mission is to reclaim a cursed book powerful enough to seal away evil. Leading the charge is the new single, “Terror From Above”, a sludgy, riff-heavy march that sounds like it was dragged straight through a bog of distortion.
The track introduces a new threat: monstrous harpies that strike from the skies, ambushing the king’s forces with spellcasting fury. It’s slow, thick, and laced with that grimy doom goodness that fans of Sleep and Electric Wizard will instantly latch onto.
Clocking in at just under eight minutes, “Terror From Above” sets the tone for the rest of the record, which spans five sprawling tracks and runs about 38 minutes. Other songs teased from the record include “War of the Gargantuan (Aquadome)”, continuing the band’s knack for mixing lore-rich storytelling with thunderous sonic weight.
“Codex Pestilentia” will be released on limited-edition vinyl in various eye-catching colorways, as well as on cassette, CD, and digital formats. Fans of slow-burning, psychedelic-infused doom should mark their calendars—Crypt Monarch are preparing to drop one hell of a storm.
