Converge is an American band specializing in metalcore, established by vocalist and artist Jacob Bannon alongside guitarist and producer Kurt Ballou in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1990. During the recording of their influential fourth album, “Jane Doe”, in 2001, the group expanded to a four-member ensemble following the departure of guitarist Aaron Dalbec and the inclusion of bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller. This lineup has remained stable since that period. The band members have also participated in various side projects and collaborations, such as Supermachiner (Bannon), Old Man Gloom (Newton), and Mutoid Man (Koller). Characterized by an intensely aggressive and innovative sound rooted in hardcore and heavy metal, Converge is recognized as a pioneer of the metalcore genre and its subgenre, mathcore.
Converge gained prominence with their album “Jane Doe”, which was recognized as the best album of 2001 by Terrorizer and the best album of the decade by Sputnikmusic. It was also ranked as the 61st-best metal album of all time by Rolling Stone. Subsequently, the band transitioned from Equal Vision Records to the larger Epitaph Records, resulting in more intricate and costly record productions. Special releases are frequently managed by Deathwish Inc., a label founded by Bannon in 1999. Their most recent works include their ninth studio album, “The Dusk in Us” (2017), and their first full-length collaboration, “Bloodmoon: I” (2021), with Chelsea Wolfe. According to AllMusic, Converge is considered one of the most original and innovative bands to emerge from the punk underground.
