Breathless in silence – review of Stam1na’s “Apnea”

Author Alex Dingley - 29.4.2026

“Apnea” means “no breath”. And no – i don’t know Greek, i’m just pretending a smartass. I obviously googled the translation up. Nevertheless though, Stam1na hit the spot just right. The 2026 new release blends uncertainty and terror of asking questions that give no answers with the human need to figure out a way.

The lead singer and guitar player Antti Hyyrynen says the album depicts “a feeling of total helplessness when something should be done – but isn’t”. The single “Golem” with its lyrics combined with timeless sound brutally brings this raw truth out into the light.

Antti describes “Apnea”‘s general sensation as a “shared emotional state”, which is clearly investigated throughout the songs. Is it an analysis of the world in the face of hopeless incapability to stand up and make a change, or can it be the embracement of connection, of going through life individually yet experiencing the same emotions and states? The album leaves the listener both intrigued and fascinated, leaving with more unanswered questions than before reaching for “Apnea”.

Even if your Finnish language understanding level still leaves a lot to wish for – just musically “Käärmeennyrkki” already brings on the mind a feeling of an inner fight, of something we’re desperately trying to bury in oblivion – yet it always comes out. The real struggle? Letting go of the invisible loop that binds you.

Over the course of “Apnea” a mystic atmosphere breaks through. By the exposed guitar, the band builds the tension like a question that the listener looks for an answer to throughout the album. The first track, “Pohjoinen lehto”, like an emotional ocean immerses one in the realm of a myth expressed in a sound. Third sing, “Golem”, creates the sublime aura and slightly changes the direction of the album.
Effortless switches between Hyyrynen’s scream and occasional growl lead to the surprising musical identity of the release, one that smoothly switches right when you think you already grasped “Apnea”‘s mood. Another thing i wouldn’t dare not to mention are the unmistakable, sharp metal riffs surprisingly co-working with graceful melody, creating a sense of chaos to get blissfully lost within.

With its mastered sound ensured by clear production, which doesn’t get blurred even for one second, “Apnea” became a gem that Finnish metal can proudly represent its genre with. Great harmony and musical personalities of Olkkonen, Kangasmäki, Velin and Lähteeenmäki’s instruments filled with Hyyrynen’s vocals work finely in order for the pieces to reach an expressive apogee that creates Stam1na’s unique style.

“Apnea” reminds of a journey through a storm of uncertainty. A slow track will suddenly switch its direction, leaving you confused and fascinated at the same time, for which harsh guitar riffs might deliver the proof. If you don’t believe – just listen to “Lahja”, i won’t say more.

Looking for a release that will leave you breathless? Well, “Apnea” is the answer.
