Norwegian avant-garde metal pioneers Arcturus have officially finished their first new album since 2015’s “Arcturian”, ending almost ten years of studio inactivity, as per MetalInjection. Prophecy Productions will release the album, which will be the band’s first significant statement since reactivating in the 2010s and their first full-length release in more than a decade. Long considered one of Norway’s most progressive exports of extreme metal, Arcturus consists of guitarist Knut Magne Valle (ex-Ulver), bassist Skoll (Ved Buens Ende, ex-Ulver), keyboardist and founding member Sverd (The Kovenant, ex-Ulver), drummer Hellhammer (Mayhem), and vocalist ICS Vortex (Borknagar, ex-Dimmu Borgir).
Great News , yesterday we delivered the master tapes for the new album to @prophecypro . Its been a long journey to make this unique product of art. Soon we can share it to all of you
After bassist/vocalist Marius Vold (previously of Thorns) quit the band for personal reasons, the initial lineup was altered. With Kristoffer “Garm” Rygg on vocals, Carl August Tidemann on guitar, Skoll on bass, and the two other founding members, Hellhammer on drums and Steinar Sverd Johnsen as the primary composer and keyboardist, the band quickly gained the moniker of a black metal supergroup. Samoth contributed guitar to the “Constellation” EP, which was published by his company, Nocturnal Art, in 1994.
Rygg left the band after the release of three full-length albums. Øyvind Haegeland from the band Spiral Architect took his position. Øyvind did not feature on any recordings, however he did perform live with the band. The band broke up on January 5, 2005, after announcing that Øyvind had moved too far away to make it feasible for him to stay involved. Simen “ICS Vortex” Hestnæs, who had previously sung on three Arcturus songs: “Master of Disguise,” “The Chaos Path,” and “Painting My Horror” on “La Masquerade Infernale”, succeeded him. Knut Magne Valle joined the band when Carl August Tidemann left. Tore Moren became an official member of the band after joining on second guitar for live performances in 2003.
