The band, originating from Southern California, was established in 1996 by vocalist and songwriter Dryden Mitchell, guitarist Terry Corso, bassist Tye Zamora, and drummer Mike Cosgrove. All members sought to escape their monotonous corporate employment by pursuing musical careers that enabled authentic self-expression. Their debut album, “Greatest Hits”, was independently released in the late 1990s and gained notable recognition. The album received the Best Independent Album award at the 1999 Los Angeles Music Awards, leading to a recording contract with Papa Roach‘s label, New Noize, in partnership with DreamWorks.
The band’s major-label debut, “ANThology”, was launched in March 2001. Its inaugural single, “Smooth Criminal,” a distinctive fusion of funk and metal derived from Michael Jackson‘s original composition, garnered considerable acclaim from the target demographic. This track achieved the pinnacle position on the modern rock charts. Concurrently, the album attained platinum certification. Subsequently, a year later, the band commenced recording new material amidst a European tour. The track “Bug Bites” was prominently featured in the “Spiderman” film in May 2002. During the same month, while en route to a performance in Portugal from Spain, the band’s transport vehicle was involved in a collision with a truck, resulting in the fatality of their driver, Christopher Holland. The incident also inflicted various injuries upon the band and crew, with Mitchell sustaining the most severe, a fractured C2 vertebra. Post-surgical intervention, Mitchell regained the ability to ambulate. However, he experienced subsequent nerve damage and a partial reduction in mobility.
Alien Ant Farm subsequently entered the studio to produce their sophomore album, “truANT”. This record was released in May 2003, coinciding with the dissolution of DreamWorks as a record label. Consequently, the album’s commercial impact on the U.S. charts was minimal. Nevertheless, its single “These Days” achieved a Top 30 position. Following this period, guitarist Corso departed from the ensemble and was succeeded by Joe Hill. Subsequently, Zamora withdrew to pursue collegiate studies after the completion of the band’s fourth recording project. The fourth effort, “Up in the Attic”, was released in July 2006 under New Door Records, with Alex Barreto (formerly of Chain Of Strength and Inside Out) assuming bass duties. Concurrently, Alien Ant Farm issued the “BUSted” DVD, comprising music videos, live performances, and a documentary feature.
