Agriculture to release new album “The Spiritual Sound” in October – debut single “Bodhidharma”

Los Angeles black‑metal outfit Agriculture have announced their upcoming full‑length “The Spiritual Sound”, due out October 3rd, 2025 via The Flenser. Leading the charge, the band dropped their first single, “Bodhidharma” —an intense opening salvo that captures their refusal to blend into the sanitized background.

With roots that go back to LA’s noise underground, Agriculture’s sound revolves around two primary voices: Dan Meyer and Leah Levinson. On side A of the album, the music erupts in ferocious, cathartic tremolo; side B leans into slow, devotional textures. Dan channels Zen Buddhism, historical collapse, and ecstatic grief, while Leah draws from queer history, AIDS-era literature, and survival as ritual. Together they form a “spiritual grammar” that turns the album into a unified expression rather than a collection of songs.

The band’s origins speak to that duality: what began as improvisational jams between Kern Haug and Dan Meyer evolved with the addition of Richard Chowenhill and Leah Levinson, establishing the quartet as a committed spiritual metal force . Their previous releases—2022’s “The Circle Chant”, 2023’s self‑titled LP, and 2024’s “Living Is Easy”—progressively deepened their blend of ecstatic black metal, devotional structures, and radiant heaviness.

Their creative process reflects this idea of dismantling and rebuilding: Dan and Leah bring initial ideas, the band unpacks and reconstructs them through intense collaboration, with Richard adding guitar layers and solos, and Kern forming unconventional rhythms. Richard also co‑produces, bringing the communal song out through persistence, not mere inspiration.

Despite the ambition, “The Spiritual Sound” remains grounded in everyday reality: gas‑station snacks, sleeping on tour‑van floors, mildew‑scented DIY shows. The band doesn’t promise salvation—what they offer is presence. In a world where sound is flattened into an algorithm, Agriculture demands to be heard in full.

Their new single, “Bodhidharma”, invokes the Zen patriarch who famously declared to a Chinese emperor that “vast emptiness, nothing holy” was the essence of true truth. The track echoes that philosophy: no vibe, no background, just presence. It’s available now, framed by an official video that visually channels their spiritual ferocity and refusal.
