A needed dose of brutality: Epitomectomy’s waited second LP “Morbid Obsessions” is here – review of their new album

Author Daniel Escobar - 30.7.2025

Founded by Ramón Carrillo in the deep Pensilvanya back in 2020, Epitomectomy have always known how to blend Slam and Brutal Death Metal creating a pretty unique style, even recognisable for the most experienced extreme fans.

Debuting with “The Epitome of Fucked” EP back in 2021 and releasing “Incoherent Mumbling of the Dead” album the next year, they’ve been getting a considerable number of fans that have been waiting for 3 (kind of long) years for their new work.

Highliting Carrillo’s work as the only member that takes care about the instrumentals with an incredible level, he never lost his hopes on keeping the project alive. So, in late 2024, the pieces started to fit after announcing their new vocalist Drake Gambill, who would prove his extreme abilities for bringing us some of the nastiest vocals from the East Coast. “Morbid Obsessions”, released today in June 29th 2025, tries to reach some new standards on Brutal Slam taking their previous works as a foundation for getting everything to a higher level, and they’ve definetly proven that.

The Deep Woods Defleshing” (ft. Invirulant), “Post Mortem Parturition“, “Morbid Obsessions” (ft. Desoectomy) or the only Single “Mass Grave” are some of the best examples of what this album can bring us, with an extended variety of blastbeats, bass drops and Breakdowns that characterize one of the most nasty genres for some, and one of the most enjoyable ones for some other; our opinion being the second one as it is obvious.

The album starts with some misterious and dark aura, giving us the usual environment that Epitomectomy has been showing us these last years; gore, chain sounds, waiting for the worse of the cases to happen… till everything collapses and we get the opening track, with some traces of what we can expect on this one.

Following to the first full song “Gaping Cadaver Resurrection Through Stitched Implantation of Limbless Heap” (yup, a pretty short name for a song of this genre, to be honest), you can appreciate how well blended the fast and slow parts are. Another detail to remark is definetly the drum mixing. A rawly-high snare that doesn’t occupy most of the master as many other bands do and specially a good varied use of the cymbals, also a decent work that we shouldn’t forget.

Indeed Gambill has been no other than a fresh addition to the band, following his vocal performance along the album, specially in the next two tracks; “Sawzall Costectomy” and “The Deep Woods Defleshings“… Ahhh these tunnel throats even with chorus are some of the nastiest things I’ve ever heard; and that’s a huge green flag for a Brutal Slam Death Metal album without a single doubt.

Approaching to the half-part of the album, we find “Mass Grave (Pressurized Gaseous Bloatation Of Fermented Corpses Reeking)“, their only released single before the album. One of the most complete tracks. A nicely done atmosphere at the start, some original blastbeat structures that play break after break. Even some parts where the snare goes in parallel with the guitars that I don’t know how, it gives you a slightly level-up on heaviness.

The gore-themed intros hit back again with “Post-Mortem Parturition“. I’d say this is the most catchy but simple riff on this album. An in-crescendo phrase that opens the door to brutality; non-simetric tempos with lots of technical drummings keeping the same riff as before, playing it heavier and heavier till the hiatus breaks for entering to one of the last songs of this work.

The Wire Piano Strangler” follows the same line as the previous one did, even being more compact despite it’s 2:43 minutes. It has to be said. If a song doesn’t stop suddenly for making us think it’s all over and then throwing us a breakdown envolved by a bassdrop, it’s not a Brutal Slam album. It’s an unwritten law that just a few will regret nowadays.

And then, the homonymous track. “Morbid Obsessions“, featuring Desoectomy, is a-bit longer song than the previous one but much better composed in my opinion, with a more clear structure where everything goes decreasing while your neck still having pain more and more.

Moshing to this one should be a must-do thing if you listen to this one, I swear.

Released by Vile Tapes and available at everything streaming platform, we truly want you to give a try for what it can be one of the heaviest albums of this 2026.
