A more metal direction – review of “Empty Hands” by Poppy

Author Benedetta Baldin - 25.1.2026

American singer Poppy is back yet with another album titled “Empty Hands”, barely two years later than her last full-length “Negative Spaces”. We’ve been listening to some singles that were released during 2025, and now it’s time to continue the rise to metal greatness with the complete record, a tour and more!

Poppy is an artist that is definitely not conventional, and yet I’m sensing especially in this release, that she’s zeroing in on her style, her identity and her uniqueness even more. While in “Zig” it was a colorful kaleidoscope of influences, genres and approaches, this time she’s focused more on the metal ones. That’s not a bad thing at all! After all, that’s what we like, right?

The production, mixing and mastering are done almost to perfection, and there’s another point in favour of her artistry. A curated product is something that lasts forever, and that’s exactly what “Empty Hands” is. Am I the only one that’s so intrigued by the a capella “Constantly Nowhere“, or the mesmerizing last single “Time Will Tell“?

Contrast is key to the album’s success, and that’s a constant from her previous releases too. Beneath glossy pop frameworks, industrial textures pulse and grind, creating a continuous conflict between accessibility and abrasion. Each track seems to be pushing itself to the limit before returning to melody.

That’s why “Empty Hands” is a solid release for Poppy, starting 2026 with the right foot. I’m missing her more experimental side, but that is just how an artist progresses and evolves. Now all that’s left to do is enjoy these tracks, perhaps at one of her shows!
